I spend everyday trying to conquer the space inside a heart, the length of a smile, and the 3000+ miles between me and my family. This little blog is where I bury all of my treasures. The good fortunes of my days. The hope and joy and dreams I hold inside.
I’m a squirrely girl who is over the moon for life. A few years ago, I married Peter Pan and pretty soon, we’re going to have our first long haired hippy baby.

There is just something about darling children in Christmas pajamas that I can never get enough of. I love the cyclical nature of the holiday season… how as a child it such an intense, magical experience. I’ve missed that magic for some years now and I can’t wait for the day when I get to live it again through my own children.

Trying to finish up the Christmas card. Lots of bribery and treats to ensure a good photo. I think I might need another session for more options.

I’ve been lusting over the adventures of our dear friends Nick and Kate since they arrived in France. Oh to spend even a day with them exploring the countryside!

today’s conclusion is that the alps make a great background for just about anything. including these pretty flowers that are the only flower left in this wintry place and with which i will be decorating the house tomorrow.

We bought a few gifts for family and pink footie pajamas with a vintage cowboys and indians printed on them for Everly.

Later, I saw these beautiful, yellow maryjanes and decided to treat myself. The sales girl looked at me like I was crazy as I stood there in front of the mirror, giantly pregnant and teetering in 3 1/2 in heels. “They’ll be fun to wear after baby comes?” she said with a smile. “After? They’ll be fun to wear now.” I said back.

I gave up sushi, raw cookie dough, and red wine when I got pregnant - but I’m not giving up my pretty shoes, thankyouverymuch.

Here’s hoping you get outside and take a few big gulps of fresh air today. That’s my plan as soon as I finish up on the work front. I’ve got to go gift hunting for one truly divine birthday girl.

Tonight we’re gussying ourselves in order to celebrate IKD (International Kate Day) in true retro style. I love birthday parties. I always have. and you want to know the one birthday party trait I’ve never outgrown? Sitting in anticipation waiting for the birthday boy/girl to open my present. I LOVE that feeling.

Also -It’s been a little while since I’ve posted one of our super speed videos - so in honor of my afternoon gift purchasing adventure… I give you - A seven second walk through our ‘hood.

I can’t remember when I posted this on my blog originally, but it was nice to see it on my dashboard… Mainly because I wrote those words a few years ago and they still ring absolutely true. and also because I miss the heck out of that lovely peach dress (which is currently living in a closet somewhere at my godmother’s house)

#3 - When I got home from dinner, the world’s tiniest Christmas tree was lit up and sparkling. This will be our first Christmas without family (They are all on the east coast and I’m not allowed to fly until after Evie is born). We bought this little guy and decked him out while playing old Elvis and Sinatra Christmas records. Having a Christmas tree makes me happy. Even if it is a tiny one.

3 little things that made yesterday a very good day.

#2- Brent got his bi-annual haircut which he I’ve dubbed “The bootleg”. He totally looks like he could walk out of one of those old black and white photos of the boys who used to run moonshine in the Appalachian mountains back in the 1930’s.

I really like his hair long - but I love when he cuts his hair short like this. He feels all new and squeaky and it gives me a direct line of view of his jawline. yummy.

3 little things that made yesterday a very good day.

#1 - What started off as a simple trip to the super-crunchy, hippie grocery store ended up with Megahn and I eating amazing German food on barstools in Hayes Valley. She had an Oktoberfest and I had an Elderberry soda and we toasted one another and shared stories in the loud, crowded space over candlelight.

And now for another episode of “We ain’t fancy, but...

And now for another episode of “We ain’t fancy, but we still like good food” with Melissa (I should totally pitch this to Food Network - the title alone screams quality television!)

Good afternoon friends. Do you love a good salad as much as I do? Recently I made my favorite salad that consisted of fresh, organic greens, diced apples, boiled egg, bacon, cheddar cheese and grilled cajun chicken. (I am hands down the worst food photographer of all time)

I wanted to share with you guys two of my favorite EASY PEASY go-to homemade vinagrettes (I’m not a huge fan of bottled salad dressings)

1. Honey dijon vinagrette - get ready for this, it’s a toughy- add equal parts balsamic vinegar, honey, and dijon mustard. whisk together. add a little fresh ground black pepper - and you’re done.

2. Balsamic Blackberry vinagrette - this one is even easier - equal parts balsamic and blackberry jam. whisk together. It’s heaven I tell you!

Most people have all of these ingredients in their kitchen cabinets and nothing beats a fresh dressing over your salad. (and now I’m craving one for lunch!)

Love,

I believe it’s important to let a dream exist on its own. Be it in written form - or spoken. I’m planting this seed in the hopes that it will grow. Ok, Here goes….

I wish that Brent and I could raise our little family while being able to spend every day together - that we could make a living writing - him, continuing to write songs for tv/film and touring occasionally & me, writing childrens books and my blogs. I dream that we could have a little house of our own with a green grass yard. and a lemon tree. and hardwood floors that creak when you get up in the middle of the night for a glass of water.

I wish that Everly could grow up surrounded by many interesting cultures, and that she learns to appreciate people for those qualities that make us human and not for those differences that society allows to divide us. I wish that we could travel with her and teach her history by showing her the actual places and not just pictures in a history book.

I wish to live simply, to leave more of a mark on the people in our lives and less of a mark on the planet that sustains us. I dream that Bailey Jane will make the Guiness book of world records for being the oldest living Boston terrier on the planet and that even when Gibson is a little old man dog that he will still give me that look that makes me feel like he understands every word I am saying and that my secret is safe with him.

I want all of this - and I believe it is possible for me to obtain it. Today my dream is moving forward.

Love,

M

All month I’ll be highlighting products that I think are...

All month I’ll be highlighting products that I think are down right awesome and unique gifts for folks on your Holiday gift list!

Who: Any kid or kid at heart

What: You can build a free standing fort - an igloo- a space ship - all by configuring the joints and poles of this fort building kit. Throw a couple of bed sheets over the top and voila! - instant awesomeness.

Even though it’s targeted at children, I can think of atleast one full grown man (cough, Brent, cough) who would have a ball with this.

Buy it: here

Thanksgiving weekend: I broke out the new colored chalk and went...

Thanksgiving weekend: I broke out the new colored chalk and went to town on our kitchen chalkboard, taking care not to color over Brent’s “Everly countdown” in the lower, right corner.

Thanksgiving weekend: On a walk to Haight St, we passed a garage...

Thanksgiving weekend: On a walk to Haight St, we passed a garage sale where I picked up a set of 4 mixing bowls for $5. He owns...

I’ve mentioned our next door neighbor Mike before. He owns a really awesome vintage store in Lower Haight and is always going to estate sales in search of awesome wares to sell. Somehow, early on, we became the recipients of all of his castoffs. Anything he didn’t think he could sell or didn’t want to take the time to fix up.

Sometimes this is a great arrangement - we’ve gotten awesome posters, neat trinkets, and some generally cool stuff that we’ve added to our home - but occasionally he leaves CRAZY stuff. Ugly stuff. “Please don’t bring that in our house” stuff.

Brent wants it all. I joke with him that if it wasn’t for me - we’d wind up on one of those hoarder television shows in a few years. Usually we just sneak the bad “gifts” into the trash or put it out on the street corner for someone else to take home.

Yesterday - a giant treasure troll was left on our door step. Brent brought it inside while I was on a conference call for work and put it in front of me. It took every ounce of self control I had not to scream. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen.

I hit the mute button on the phone and said “GET THAT OUT OF OUR HOUSE. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE” with tears welling in my eyes.

After my call I asked him what he had done with it, but all he would do is laugh and say… “oh, he’s gone. He’s no longer in the house”. It wasn’t until later when I opened the blinds did I find his creepy little face waiting for me again. “EEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeKKKKKKKKKKkkkkk! No no no no” I shouted, covering my eyes and running from the room.

“But it’s from 1967!” Brent yelled behind me “Look it up on ebay - I bet we could sell this thing”

I don’t care if it’s worth thousands - that creepy troll has got to go. I had nightmares about this thing last night. So scary. If my husband knows what’s good for him - it BETTER be in the trashcan. (please please let it be in the trashcan, with the lid closed, preferably with two bags of trash stacked on top of it)
